✧ Awakening often refers to the awakening of Kundalini. So first — what is Kundalini?

Kundalini is a living current. I did not understand this when my own journey began. I learned it by living it.
✧ With devotion and Guru, the fierce fire of Kundalini becomes a path of grace — guiding the seeker not only through energy, but through love, surrender, and trust. It is the way the ancients ✧
✧What is Kundalini?
Kundalini is the subtle energy traditionally described as resting at the base of the spine—the dormant divine feminine, or Shakti, within each being.
When awakened through grace, spiritual practice, or transmission, it rises through the central channel, the Sushumna Nadi, moving through the chakras and bringing about a process of inner transformation.
Kundalini is not merely a force. It is conscious, intelligent, and transformative. As it awakens, it can lead the seeker toward greater awareness and a deeper relationship with the Divine.
Prana is the energy of life, present throughout the body and the natural world. Kundalini is a concentrated expression of this life force when it becomes awakened.
✧Shaktipat — The Guru’s Grace
Shaktipat is the transmission of Shakti from a Guru to a seeker. Through this act of grace, the dormant Kundalini within the seeker may be awakened, beginning a process of transformation.
Although I did not receive Shaktipat from my Guru and was already awakened when I met her, it was her presence, love, and grace that guided me on my journey. Through my experiences, I came to understand Shakti as what I call “divine energy.”
Awakening is not accomplished by effort alone. There is a grace that carries the seeker through what cannot yet be understood.
✧The Universal Presence of Kundalini Shakti
Kundalini Shakti is not something that belongs only to Hinduism. It is part of being human.
Hindu traditions have given this living Divine energy the name Shakti, or Kundalini. Other religious traditions have encountered this same Divine presence and given it different names—the Holy Spirit, Divine Light, Grace, or the presence of God.
The names may be different, but the Divine is not separate from the human being. This living energy is already within us. It is part of the human experience, whether we recognize it or not.
I came to understand this energy through my own experiences. I call it divine energy, because that is how I came to know Shakti within my own being.
The spiritual journey is, in part, a journey of becoming aware of what has always been within us.

Finding My Own Answers
When Kundalini awakened in me, I discovered that much of what I was experiencing was difficult to explain within the ordinary frameworks I knew. I had questions about the changes taking place in my body, mind, emotions, and consciousness, and I began searching for answers.
I learned through meditation, observation, reading, and through the guidance of my Guru. Some answers came from what I found in the teachings. Others came through experiences that I could only understand by living through them.
My journey was not simply an awakening. It became a process of transformation that unfolded over many years.
I share this journey in much greater depth in my memoir, When the Divine Reveals Itself.

Kundalini Awakening Is Not Something to Pursue Lightly
I do not recommend that people seek to awaken Kundalini simply because they are curious about the experience.
Kundalini awakening can bring profound transformation, but the process can also be very difficult. The changes are not limited to consciousness or meditation. They can affect the physical body, the mind, the emotions, and the way we experience the world.
In my own journey, there were times when it was difficult to function normally. There were migraine-like headaches, disturbances in sleep, digestive problems, intense movements of energy, and periods when my body seemed to be going through changes that I could not control or understand.
It can feel as though the human being is being broken apart and put back together again—not all at once, but layer by layer. Something is being changed physically, mentally, emotionally, and energetically, while ordinary life continues around you.
The experience is not the same for everyone.
I came to understand that the intensity and nature of the process can differ according to what each person carries within—the conditioning, impressions, and what I understand as the karmic luggage from previous lives—as well as the intensity of the awakening itself.
I sometimes think of the inner system as a stream. Where the passage is clear, the current can move differently than where there are many obstructions. The current itself may be different, and so the experience of the awakening may also be different. What is released, what is experienced, and what consciousness reveals can vary greatly from one person to another.
For some, the changes may be relatively gentle. For others, life can change profoundly.
My own life changed profoundly.
This is why I do not encourage anyone to try to awaken Kundalini for the sake of having spiritual experiences. Awakening is not a spiritual accomplishment to be collected. It is a process of transformation, and the human being must be prepared to live through what that transformation brings.
If awakening occurs, the question becomes not How can I make this happen? but How do I learn to live with what is happening and allow the transformation to unfold?
That is where meditation, grounding, attention to the body, responsible medical care, and—when available—the guidance of a true Guru can become important.

If You Feel Drawn to Know More
If you feel drawn to know more about your soul or consciousness, you do not need to seek an awakening.
My suggestion is to begin by having faith in the intelligence of God’s creation. Cultivate love for God, for God is the only Being who can ultimately give you the answers to the deeper questions of your soul and consciousness.
Begin simply.
Practice some yoga exercises to help the body become more flexible and receptive. Simple breathing exercises can also help prepare the body. Develop a little awareness through meditation—learning to sit quietly, observe, and become familiar with what is happening within you.
Read. Explore the spiritual literature of those who have walked before you. Let yourself encounter different teachings and perspectives, but do not accept everything simply because it is written. Read, observe, and allow your own understanding to develop.
You do not have to force the door open.
If Kundalini is meant to awaken within you, it will awaken when the time is right.
The preparation is not about trying to make Kundalini rise. It is about becoming a more conscious human being, cultivating love, and preparing the body and mind for whatever the Divine may reveal.

The Purification Process
The process of purification may take many years, a few months, or even a week. It varies from person to person, depending on what needs to be cleared or integrated across the layers of the body and being. Symptoms also differ and evolve over time. This is why daily practice and deep observation are essential.
My own experience of Kundalini unfolded in many different ways over the years. Not everyone will experience the same things, and experiences may come and go as the process unfolds. I share some of what I experienced because I know that someone searching for an explanation may find comfort in knowing that others have experienced something similar.
- Pulsation or vibration in different parts of the body
- Energy rising through the spine
- Electric-like jolts or movements
- Headaches in the third eye area
- Sensitivity to people’s energy
- Energy moving in the forehead like the lines drawn on Lord Shiva
- A powerful force lifting the body—walking on tiptoe for a while
- Feelings of heat or cold within the body
- Spontaneous yoga poses in the early stages
- Automatic chanting of OM
- Spontaneous forms of pranayam
- Dreams of past lives
- Dreams of ascended masters
- Receiving instructions in dreams—a mantra from Lord Shiva on how to teach meditation to people
- Periods of bliss and deep inner peace
- Overwhelming feelings of love in the heart
- A sense of being divine
- Inability to eat certain foods that once felt fine—digestive sensitivity
- Handling cash made me nauseous and weak
With the constant feel of energy bombarding my head it was hard to concentrate at times. I visited different doctors and over the years I had two MRI’s done but there was nothing abnormal.
I share this because unusual physical sensations should not simply be assumed to be Kundalini. It is important to have them medically evaluated.

The Role of the Living Guru
A living Guru can be a profound guide during the process of transformation. My Guru did not awaken my Kundalini, as I was already awakened when I met her, but her presence, love, and guidance helped me understand and navigate what was unfolding within me. The presence of a living Guru can shift the energy and consciousness of the seeker in ways that cannot always be explained through words.
✧ ✶ ✧
The Inner Mechanics of Transformation
here is an inner mechanics to transformation that I did not understand when my journey began. Meditation gradually revealed to me that the human being is far more layered than I had imagined.
I began to observe how energy, thought, conditioning, emotion, memory, and consciousness interact—and how meditation changes our relationship with all of them.
As this transformation continued, mudras and spontaneous yogic movements also began to arise within me. These were not movements I had learned; they emerged through the inner process itself. I share some of these experiences in Living Mudras.
I eventually came to understand some of this through the eyes of an engineer: as though the human being has layers of processes operating within us, many of them outside our ordinary awareness.
My nervous system has changed. It has become very sensitive. My body has become so sensitive to mantra that I now experience each one within me—its texture, its vibration, its effect.

Food and Transformation
As the transformation progressed, even my relationship with food changed. I learned to listen closely to my body and eventually wrote about these changes in Living Lightly.
✧ ✶ ✧
Divine Merging
As I continued on the path, I became more absorbed in the Divine and began to experience what I describe as a “merging.” These experiences took me into deeper states of consciousness and changed my understanding of what it means to experience the Divine.
I share these experiences in my memoir, When the Divine Reveals Itself.

The Guru’s Instruction and the Path of Transmission
What began as inner transformation soon became outer offering. So much was happening very fast, and I met with my Guru only a few times. Then came her instruction—simple, yet profound: You can stop meditating, but you may sit with others and give meditation. She told others in the group that I was a “saint” and instructed them, Go and sit with her. Just take dried fruits and don’t trouble her to provide anything. If you want food, you must bring it.
On another occasion when I visited her ashram she said – wear white. You can sit with others and give meditation and blessings. I didn’t fully understand, but I listened. There was no going back. Her words became the seed, and I walked as a transmitter—not by choice, but by grace. The merging I had experienced with the Divine now flowed outward, touching others in silence. This journey continues—not as a role, but as a living resonance.
This may all seem strange but this is my life experience. For many years without proper understanding I fought myself and was most fearful. Fearful to allow my story to unfold; fearful to proceed and surrender and wanted to not seem strange and be accepted by friends and family. I have to be true to myself as you have to be true to yourself. It is the only space where you can be happy.
I’ve shared two video interviews below, where I speak about how the energy feels in my body and how this journey unfolded. May they offer insight or comfort to those walking a similar path.
